Well folks, 5 years after we opened the Slow Boat Taproom on Dongsi Batiao, we have received notice that the architecture above us is in violation and will be removed. This has nothing to do with us. Our business and operating licenses were renewed less than 1 month ago. For those that don’t know, this is part of the 开墙打洞 campaign and there are three stages: 1) correct architectural violations, 2) brick up entrances / doors in violation, and lastly 3) buy back the land so it can be renovated and resold. When renovation starts our beloved Taproom will be closed. We are not certain how long. In fact, we’re not sure if we will be able to reopen. Only time will tell. Still, we are forced to plan for the worst. Yeah. We're sad too. But take heart! The news is not all bad. At the Taproom our last day of full food service will be Friday, the 19th but on Saturday, the 20th, we will be celebrating 5 years by offering pints of our Monkey’s Fist IPA for ¥5 a pint. So come over, grab a beer, and let's go down with this ship....

In November of 1932, just before the Prohibition-era ended in America, “Beer,” wrote Walter Lippman in his nationally syndicated column, “would be a great help in fighting off the mental depression inflicted upon the great multitudes by [bad] weather, bank failures, and unemployment.” And lo, how the multitudes in China have suffered, both from the bleakness of our dreary and polluted weather, and from the seemingly endless cascade of undrinkable swill during this long and Prohibitive era of non-craft beer. Here at Slow Boat Brewery we agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Lippmann. Beer is the solution to all your woes. Here’s how: 1.) Bad weather: Sandstorms, poison air, sweltering heat—not in our taproom! Our new air-conditioning unit lurks in the corner keeping your cold beers cold. And that display panel? I’m not sure what it is, but it’s DEFINITELY NOT a security camera. No, definitely not. 2.) Bank failures: Okay we got nothing for this one. 3.) Unemployment: Slow Boat is hiring! Now do you want to do something noble like teach English or work for a nonprofit? Or do you want to join our crew? Take Walter Lippman’s advice and help ease the depression of the multitudes! And what’s in it for you? Free beer! 85-year-old cultural references! Happy drunk coworkers! What’s not to like? Email ashley@slowboatbrewery.com if interesting in bartending, cooking, or sales/marketing. Slow Boat Beer: the answer to ANYTHING life throws at you (except bank failures)...
