HISTORY

Slow Boat Brewery was born in the mountains surrounding Beijing during the summer of 2011. Founded by Chandler Jurinka and Daniel Hebert, Slow Boat began as a small pilot brewery nestled high within the Beijing hills, sourcing pristine well-water from hundreds of meters below the ground. The remote mountaintop village proved to be a perfect brewing environment and we were soon producing bold, flavorful ales and lagers with a distinctly Chinese identity.

After sharing our beer at pop-up events and venues around the city, Slow Boat gained a steady following of craft devotees and we began to hunt for a more permanent home for our beer.

In December 2012, we found that home. Hidden in the maze-like alleyways of the Dongsi sub district, the Slow Boat Brewery Taproom opened with no heat, no floor, and no doors. Chandler’s and Daniel’s wives, both four months pregnant on opening day, served as the Taproom’s first bartenders.

Humble though it was, the drinkers came to our Taproom in droves, and when the doors finally did arrive we had hundreds of extra hands to help install them. The Taproom’s first year saw Slow Boat sweep citywide awards for our beer and burgers as we worked rapidly to expand our beer selection, focusing on seasonal beers that embody the best of Chinese ingredients and local culture.

In the fall of 2016, after many months of planning and renovation, we opened our first brewpub in Beijing’s popular Sanlitun district. This 3-floor, 750 square meter brewpub houses an on-site brewery where we tap fresh beer directly from the tanks. We are proud to offer the largest number of seasonally rotating beers anywhere in the city—small-batch brews that continuously push the creative boundaries of Chinese craft beer.

You will find our bottles and kegs in cities all across China, where drinkers are increasingly forgoing industrial lagers in favor of local craft beer. The Middle Kingdom is an ever-changing landscape but we are dedicated to furthering the Chinese craft movement and to making beer that China is proud to call its own.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Founders, Daniel Hebert and Chandler Jurinka, both Americans and long-term Beijing expats, became friends in 2009 over their shared appreciation for craft beer. Two years later, Slow Boat Brewery was born out of their desire to bring North American brewing styles to China, while still creating uniquely Chinese beers. The name “Slow Boat” comes from the song, “Slow Boat to China” written by Frank Loesser in the late 40s. The lyrics refer to a long enjoyable trip from the United States to China… an aptly fitting metaphor if we do say so ourselves.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Slow Boat is always looking for passionate, smart people who love beer and love working in a team. We regularly review applications for positions in sales, marketing, and F&B management.
